Current Programs and Services

Film Presentation

In contrast to a for-profit theatre, our film programming encompasses a diverse range from commercial new releases to cult classics, documentaries, international selections, independent films, and local work.

Kootenay Film Festival

Launching in 2017 with our inaugural event, Kinesis: A Celebration of Kootenay Film, The Civic Theatre is the creator and host of an annual Kootenay film festival, bringing local film content, professional development sessions, and panel discussions to the region.

Youth Initiative

We help youth develop screen-based projects and deepen their appreciation and engagement surrounding film and screen-based media. We also offer valuable employment and entry-level workplace training each year in our concession and box office.

Developmental Residencies

Making our space available to artists to undertake critical components of their work or a part of the process of creative development. Small experiences already and are in the process of developing several others for the future.

Seniors Engagement Program

Seniors in our community were central to the establishment of our organization and continue to be key organizational leaders, volunteers, and patrons today. We offer sensory daytime screenings, enriching volunteering opportunities at the theatre, and the opportunity to develop community programming.

Family-Friendly Events

We offer two intergenerational family celebrations, Zombie Walk and Home for the Holidays, annually for free to everyone in the community.

Kootenay Screen-Based Industry

In May 2016, we convened a meeting of local screen-based professionals and learned that there is an appetite for connection opportunities locally. Responding to this need, we manage The Kootenay Screen Based Industry Workers Facebook Group, now with more than 300 participants, provide monthly meetups, and host quarterly open screenings in our space.

Support of Community Groups

We provide other nonprofit organizations complementary and reduced-price movie tickets for use as incentives, auction items, or outings for members facing challenges. We also provide free big screen advertising, as well as reduced rental rates of our space.
